Teeth Whitening in Lake Worth, TX

Before and after photo of teeth whitening treatment at HomeTown Dental at Lake Worth in Lake Worth, TXYour teeth can become discolored for a number of reasons. Though this does not necessarily indicate infection or tooth decay, many people choose to have whitening treatment to restore their smile. The American Academy of Dentistry conducted a survey and found that having white teeth is a top aesthetic concern among people. However, many daily habits can cause discoloration, such as your diet. There are both at-home and professional teeth whitening treatments available to you. We provide teeth whitening at HomeTown Dental - Lake Worth Dentist & Braces.

Why Whitening Is Important

Tooth discoloration is pretty hard to avoid so teeth whitening treatments are very important to many people. Drinks such as tea, coffee, dark sodas, and red wine can cause discoloration. Certain foods, such as red sauce and dark colored fruits, can also cause your teeth to lose their color. Habits such as smoking can affect your health, but they can also cause tooth discoloration as well. Whitening treatments are important in restoring your natural smile. Whiter smiles often lead to higher self-confidence for people as well.

Treatment Options

There are actually a decent number of home whitening treatments available. These include rinses and toothpastes, whitening strips, chewing gum, and tray-based whiteners. Certain mouth rinses contain hydrogen peroxide, which is a bleaching agent that whitens your teeth. Whitening toothpastes have an abrasive texture, which helps to polish the teeth. Whitening gum stimulates saliva production and coats your teeth to prevent stains. Saliva also helps to clean the teeth. Whitening strips use a peroxide gel to whiten your teeth.

Tray-based whiteners are available for home use, but they are slightly more complicated. Our dentist can also customize a kit for you. The tray has a peroxide gel which bleaches your teeth. This is intended for daily use and the sessions are around thirty to sixty minutes long. There will be specific instructions listed on the packaging, though.

Our office has gel and ultraviolet light to use for whitening treatment. The gel has a bleaching agent which is in a higher concentration than it would be in over-the-counter gels. The ultraviolet light activates the bleaching agent so that it whitens your teeth.

Whitening Procedure

For at-home treatments, you will have instructions available on the packaging. For treatments at our office, you can usually have results within the first session. These typically last about thirty minutes. First, we apply a protective coating to your lips and gum that shields them from the ultraviolet light. We can then put the whitening gel on your teeth. Then, we use the ultraviolet light to activate the bleaching ingredient in the gel. You will see whitening results shortly. If you have dental crowns, veneers, and fillings they cannot be changed by whitening products.

Our dentist will explain ways to prevent tooth discoloration in the future. In general, you will need to be careful of what you eat and drink and stop smoking if you are a smoker. Brush twice a day and floss at least once a day. This is especially important after you consume foods or drinks with dark pigments. You will need to stop using all tobacco products, including both cigarettes and chewing tobacco.
